ITC Clearface: background and attribution

Morris Fuller Benton’s Clearface dates to 1907 in the publisher’s account. Victor Caruso developed the ITC interpretation and matching italic in 1978, distinguishing the later family from the earlier ATF version.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The publisher highlights teardrop endings on a, c and f, small serifs and a large x-height. The matching italic is part of the ITC development. Clearface Gothic is a separate name and is not treated as another weight here.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a short editorial heading with an ordinary paragraph. Lora and Alice provide independently designed serif comparisons. Allow space for the text and inspect the italic alongside the upright.

For independent comparisons, try Lora and Alice. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
