ITC Bauhaus: background and attribution

Ed Benguiat and Victor Caruso developed ITC Bauhaus in 1975 from influences associated with Herbert Bayer’s 1925 Universal alphabet experiment. The modern family is a specific interpretation of that design context, not a font file produced by the original school.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The publisher emphasizes geometric construction and relatively uniform strokes. Keep ITC Bauhaus distinct from the separate Bauhaus 93 resource; a shared reference does not establish identical letters or the same styles.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a short geometric title and a longer label. Josefin Sans and Poiret One provide independent display comparisons with their own documented references. Check the actual lowercase word rhythm instead of judging only an isolated round capital.

For independent comparisons, try Josefin Sans and Poiret One. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
