HTML Font Color: Change Text with CSS

Find the right setting, understand its scope and keep your words editable.

Use CSS color for the foreground of text in an HTML page. Keep the text’s color separate from its background and choose a selector that reaches only the intended content.

01

Write a scoped color rule

For a class-based example, .notice { color: #24543f; } applies a green foreground to the matching element. CSS accepts named colors, hexadecimal values and other color functions.

Use a real class on the intended HTML element. The color property does not change the letters’ family or load a font resource.

02

Separate foreground and background

The color property controls text foreground; background-color controls a background. Both matter when checking contrast. Inherited text color can also be affected by a more specific or later rule.

If a link or nested element stays a different color, inspect its own matching rules instead of repeatedly changing an unrelated parent.

03

Preserve meaning without color alone

Use clear wording, structure and appropriate indicators rather than relying only on red or green to explain a state. Check the chosen text against the actual background and relevant viewing modes.

A color value that looks strong in a large heading may be harder to read in a small paragraph.

04

Combine it with a coherent type system

Read HTML font-family setup and CSS text size for independent controls. Compare a heading and paragraph before applying a global color change.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Does font-color work as a CSS property?

Use color for the text foreground. Font family and size have their own CSS properties.

Does changing the background automatically choose a readable text color?

No. Assess the foreground and background together and preserve clear contrast.
