01

Start with the exact edition

Hanken Design describes HK Grotesk Pro as an expansion of the free HK Grotesk typeface. Its separate Hanken Grotesk listing names Alfredo Marco Pradil as the project lead and describes revisions to geometry, metrics, punctuation and OpenType features. These names therefore deserve an edition check: do not assume a file called HK Grotesk has the same features, spacing or licensing as every related release.

02

Compare the foundry’s intended character

The Pro description places the design within the classic grotesque tradition and explicitly references Akzidenz Grotesk, Univers, Trade Gothic and Gill Sans. That is useful context for evaluating its restrained sans serif appearance. It is not a claim that those families are interchangeable. Compare a real heading, a paragraph and numerals in the specific font you intend to use; judge spacing and rhythm alongside individual letter shapes.

03

Check the distribution and license together

The Hanken Grotesk product page directs users to MyFonts and says that its price and license follow that distributor’s terms. The Pro page offers separately labeled desktop and web choices. Follow the link for the exact edition and read its permitted uses before installation or deployment. A statement about the original family being free does not establish the terms of a Pro package or another distribution.

04

Record the family used in the project

Keep the family name, source and edition with the design handoff. Preview the actual punctuation, figures and language text your project needs rather than relying on a sample alphabet. For web work, check that the licensed files match the family named in the stylesheet and compare the fallback layout. The Unicode text guide explains why copying styled characters is a different operation from applying a font.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is HK Grotesk Pro the original free HK Grotesk?

Hanken Design describes Pro as an enhanced version with expanded capabilities. Check the exact package rather than treating both names as one release.

Does a free original mean every related edition is free?

No. Read the terms for the exact edition and distribution you choose.
