Herculanum: background and attribution

Herculanum is Adrian Frutiger’s contribution to Linotype’s 1990 Type before Gutenberg program. The publisher connects the design with first-century Roman writing and names it after Herculaneum. The historical reference is distinct from the modern font’s creation: the digital family did not exist in antiquity.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Compare the broad letter shapes and relatively narrow strokes in the original specimen. The linked family includes Roman, Bold and Outline resources; an outline is a different rendering treatment rather than simply a lighter filled letter. Judge the precise edition when matching a document.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a short exhibition heading or historical title, then reduce it to the smallest intended output. Compare a filled and outline treatment on the same background. Use a quieter companion for explanatory paragraphs and avoid assuming that a classical appearance makes every long passage easy to read.

For independent comparisons, try Cinzel and Marcellus. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
