Helvetica Now: background and attribution

Helvetica Now is Monotype Studio’s contemporary reworking of Helvetica for present-day typography. Monotype dates the beginning of planning and design to December 2014 and describes a collaboration involving dozens of designers and engineers. Every character was redrawn and refitted, with useful alternates added. The project is organized around the conditions in which text is read, rather than assuming that one unchanged drawing will serve every size equally well.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Monotype identifies three optical sizes: Micro, Text and Display. These are purpose-specific drawings within the family, so Display is not simply a larger menu size applied to the Text cut. The official catalog also emphasizes revised fitting and alternate characters. When comparing Helvetica Now with older Helvetica editions, inspect the exact optical cut and spacing. A familiar family name does not establish that a replacement will preserve existing line breaks or visual texture.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Build a sample containing a large page title, a paragraph and a small chart label. Choose the relevant optical design for each role before adjusting size and weight. Compare the chart labels against the real background and keep a clear distinction between a numeral and a similarly shaped letter. When replacing another Helvetica edition, revisit wrapping in buttons, headings and captions instead of relying on the previous text-box dimensions.

For independent comparisons, try Inter and Roboto. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
