Halyard: background and attribution

Darden Studio released Halyard in 2017, crediting Joshua Darden, Eben Sorkin and Lucas Sharp as designers. The family draws selected ideas from nineteenth- and early twentieth-century grotesques, including work associated with Schelter & Giesecke, Miller and Richard, and Morris Fuller Benton. It reworks those references into a coordinated contemporary system.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Micro, Text and Display are separate optical branches across the documented 48 styles. Their size-specific construction matters independently of weight. Choose the intended branch before assuming a nominal size or weight gives the same texture in every Halyard resource.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a small caption, a paragraph and a large headline in the appropriate optical branches. Inspect punctuation and spacing at each final size. Keep the branch names recorded in the document so a collaborator does not replace Micro with Display merely because the weight matches.

For independent comparisons, try Inter and Open Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
