GT Alpina: background and attribution

Reto Moser designed GT Alpina, released by Grilli Type in 2020. The foundry describes a practical serif family that brings expressive forms from typographic history into a coordinated contemporary system. Its historical references inform the design without making it a revival of one named source.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The family includes Condensed, Standard and Extended branches, related Fine options and a Typewriter branch. Compare these resource identities separately from weight and italic choices. The Fine options need to be judged at actual output size, especially where delicate details meet a busy background.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Build an editorial heading above a paragraph, then compare a Fine setting for the heading with a standard reading choice. Inspect small capitals and numeral options in the selected resource. A free trial helps evaluate a layout; it does not make the licensed production collection free.

For independent comparisons, try Lora and Source Serif 4. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
