Graphite: background and attribution
David Siegel began exploring Graphite in 1982, using architect Anthony Celis LaRosa’s handwriting as his model. Adobe credits assistance from David Berlow and Tom Rickner. Its pencil-like character distinguishes this project from an ink-based architectural handwriting model.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Graphite was released as a multiple master design with weight and width axes. The family spans light condensed to black extended treatments while retaining an upright handwritten structure. Historical multiple master technology should not automatically be described as a current variable-font download.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a sketch caption, room label and short annotation at their final sizes. Choose a width that fits without manually compressing the letters. Keep measurements and longer instructions clear when mixing informal notes with technical information.
For independent comparisons, try Handlee and Patrick Hand. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
Official preview and font resources
Use Adobe Originals to try the original and investigate the files, styles and terms for your intended workflow. This site does not distribute or serve Graphite font software.
The editable alternatives here have their own source profiles and included licenses. For the difference between a font file and copied characters, read Unicode text versus fonts.
