Gotham Rounded: background and attribution

Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones designed Gotham Rounded in 2004, adapting Gotham’s construction with softened corners. Its early use appeared in Print magazine. The rounded adaptation has its own documented resources and should be distinguished from simply applying an outline effect to Gotham.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The source offers Light, Book, Medium and Bold with italic companions. Its inspiration includes engineering templates and instrument lettering. Check this family’s own package and script coverage rather than transferring claims about newer Gotham releases to the Rounded branch.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try an interface heading and a short product label in Book and Bold. Compare the corners at the smallest planned size, including punctuation and numbers. Use the genuine italic resource where needed and keep supporting paragraphs at a comfortable size and line length.

For independent comparisons, try Nunito Sans and Manrope. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
