Gopher: background and attribution
Adam Ladd designed Gopher as a geometric sans-serif exploration with reverse contrast. Its Gopher, Gopher Text and Gopher Display branches vary the amount of contrast within a related system. Their relationship supports coordinated layouts without implying that the branches are interchangeable.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The Text branch uses the least contrast and Display the most pronounced contrast. Compare the same mixed-case word in each to see where horizontal and vertical strokes change emphasis. A heavier weight and stronger contrast are different decisions, so evaluate both deliberately.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a magazine title above a short reading passage. Choose a branch for each role before fine-tuning size and weight. Reduce the whole page to a realistic viewing size to judge whether the contrast in the display letters still helps the hierarchy.
For independent comparisons, try Josefin Sans and Righteous. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
