GitHub identifies its own brand typefaces
GitHub’s December 2022 announcement introduces Mona Sans and Hubot Sans as open-source variable fonts under the Open Font License. It credits the Mona Sans collaboration with Degarism and describes its industrial-grotesque influence, while Hubot Sans adds more geometric accents. The announcement identifies marketing pages and GitHub Universe among their uses. Both were introduced with weight, width and slant variation rather than as one fixed visual setting.
Code typography is a different documented role
Primer’s official typography source maintains separate sans-serif and monospace stacks. Its monospace fallback list includes ui-monospace, SFMono-Regular, SF Mono, Menlo, Consolas and Liberation Mono. The font actually rendered can depend on the available system faces and the active design token. Do not identify every code screenshot as Mona Sans simply because GitHub distributes that family, or assume one operating system’s fallback will appear identically on another.
Plan an original project page around reading tasks
Create a fictional project page with a short product heading, a setup paragraph and one code example. Choose a readable text treatment for the instructions before making the main heading more expressive. If you experiment with width or weight in a variable face, keep the paragraph measure stable and compare the longest instruction. A broad display setting that works in two words may make a full sentence harder to scan.
Test the code sample separately from its explanation
Use a small original snippet containing brackets, quotation marks, indentation and similar characters such as one, lowercase l and capital I. Compare it beside a sentence that explains what the snippet does. Keep code and prose visibly distinct without making either excessively small. Inter, Manrope and Source Code Pro are independent comparison specimens here; follow the official GitHub project for the actual Mona Sans and Hubot Sans releases and their license.
Your questions, answered.
Is the GitHub font the same as the font in every code block?
No. The published brand families and a monospace interface stack serve different roles. Inspect the particular page and its active stack when identifying a code sample.
Where should I obtain GitHub’s actual published typefaces?
Use the official announcement and linked repositories for the genuine families, available editions and license. The independently named specimens on this page are comparisons rather than relabelled GitHub files.
