General Sans: background and attribution
Frode Helland designed General Sans for Indian Type Foundry. Its rationalist sans forms reference the atmosphere of mid-twentieth-century French typography while retaining a lively character.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Tight apertures, broad f and t forms and circular dots contribute to its identity. The default lowercase a is double-storey and g single-storey, which are useful shapes to inspect when comparing candidates.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a restrained identity heading with an explanatory paragraph. Compare actual letter widths and numerals instead of assuming any neo-grotesk has the same spacing.
For independent comparisons, try DM Sans and Open Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
