Frutiger: background and attribution
Adrian Frutiger’s airport-signage work began with a commission for Charles de Gaulle Airport in 1968. The publisher records the expanded Frutiger family in 1976, developed with Stempel and Linotype beyond that original signage task.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The source emphasizes recognizable individual forms for different viewing distances and angles. The later retail family also serves other typographic roles. Frutiger and later Next or Neue developments should be identified by their actual edition rather than assumed to have identical metrics.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
For a visitor-information study, compare a place name, a short instruction and a paragraph. Inspect ambiguous letters without relying on colour alone, and check the real viewing distance. Open Sans and Source Sans 3 provide independent humanist-oriented comparisons.
For independent comparisons, try Open Sans and Source Sans 3. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
