Franchise: background and attribution
Derek Weathersbee's account traces Franchise to a 2008 project first released as a free beta. The later Franchise Pro page describes both extending and reworking that original. Its documented April 2021 release belongs to the expanded Pro edition, rather than marking the beginning of the entire Franchise project.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The Pro account describes revised optical details, more decisive edges, coordinated weights, lowercase and oblique resources. It also lists small capitals, contextual alternatives, discretionary ligatures and old-style numerals. Do not assume an early free beta contains all those later features or identical shapes.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a short event headline, a scoreboard label and a mixed-case heading. Inspect the selected edition's lowercase and numeral options in the actual application. Choose a designed weight for hierarchy and keep long supporting passages in a calmer text face if the display rhythm becomes too forceful.
For independent comparisons, try Anton and Bebas Neue. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.

Use Interrobang Type Co. to try the original and investigate the files, styles and terms for your intended workflow. This site does not distribute or serve Franchise font software.
The editable alternatives here have their own source profiles and included licenses. For the difference between a font file and copied characters, read Unicode text versus fonts.
Your questions, answered.
Is Franchise Pro identical to the original free beta?
No. The creator describes the Pro edition as an extension and reworking, with revised details and additional resources.
What does the April 2021 date refer to?
The linked current product page gives that date for Franchise Pro. Weathersbee separately describes the original Franchise project in 2008.
Do early Franchise files include Pro's lowercase and oblique?
Do not assume that. Identify the edition and inspect the actual resources before depending on later features.
