01

Formata: background and attribution

Bernd Möllenstädt’s Formata was released in 1984. The publisher’s account emphasizes curved strokes and restrained details within a sans-serif structure, while the family’s later extensions broadened its available widths.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Normal and condensed resources have their own drawings and typographic features. Inspect small capitals, figure choices and the selected width in the original specimen. Do not infer that the same detail will be equally conspicuous in a small paragraph and a large heading.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a document heading and a body passage. Open Sans and Alegreya Sans provide independent sans-serif directions. Use a real column width and inspect small details before choosing a display treatment for reading text.

For independent comparisons, try Open Sans and Alegreya Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
