Font Sprite Sheets: Bitmap Atlases, Metrics and Character Coverage

Explore the sources, compare the examples and choose the right approach.

01

A bitmap font needs more than an alphabet picture

AngelCode’s BMFont generates images and character descriptions from TrueType fonts for rendering in games. Its manual explains that packed glyphs need not occupy regular positions; the descriptor locates them. Keep the texture and its matching metadata together. A decorative alphabet PNG alone does not specify which character each image represents or how the renderer should place successive letters.

02

Understand image bounds and advance separately

BMFont’s format distinguishes each glyph’s image position and size from its xoffset, yoffset and xadvance. The advance moves the text cursor after drawing, while offsets place the image relative to that cursor. It also records common line metrics and optional kerning pairs. Cropping every glyph tightly without preserving those relationships can change the text’s rhythm even when the texture still looks correct.

03

Plan the repertoire and texture spacing deliberately

Start with the actual interface strings, numerals, punctuation and supported languages rather than exporting only a convenient English alphabet. The BMFont export guide distinguishes padding for effects from spacing between packed images and explains that mipmapped textures need separation to limit neighboring-image bleed. Choose settings for the actual rendering pipeline; a texture that looks clean in an image viewer may behave differently when sampled at another scale.

04

Keep the export reproducible in the target application

Retain the source family, style, selected character list and export settings with the project. Confirm which descriptor format and texture channels the receiving engine supports before committing to a package. Compare a long label, a short number and multiple lines using the same files. The arcade collection explores visual styles; it does not replace a compatible bitmap-font asset. Use the Unicode guide when distinguishing character identifiers from visible glyph drawings.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is a sprite-sheet font always a fixed-cell image grid?

No. BMFont documents packed layouts whose descriptor records each glyph’s position. Use the metadata appropriate to the exported assets.

Is a glyph’s bitmap width always its text advance?

No. BMFont stores image width and xadvance as separate values, along with placement offsets.
