Start with feature categories
The OpenType registry distinguishes standard, discretionary, contextual and required ligature features. Their roles differ; a decorative option should not be confused with a shaping feature required for a writing system.
The comparison controls optional forms through CSS. It is not a font editor and does not reveal or rewrite every substitution table in a file.
Use the same sequence in both columns
Try words containing fi, fl or repeated letters, then compare the selected family. The reference disables optional ligatures. The selected treatment requests common ligatures and contextual forms or disables optional forms.
A visible change is not guaranteed. The chosen font needs an applicable feature for the entered sequence, and the browser’s shaping system needs to support it.
Distinguish glyphs from characters
A coordinated shape does not necessarily replace the underlying word with a new Unicode character. Keep ordinary text when the goal is editable, searchable content. Copying a pictured joined shape as an image is a separate output choice.
Read Unicode text versus fonts for the difference between character substitution and actual font rendering.
Compare a family with documented contextual design
Lobster uses contextual variants and ligatures to improve connections within words. Its project history makes those resources part of the design rather than a generic effect added to every script font.
Compare Lora for another text direction and tracking for spacing. Nonzero letter-spacing can affect optional ligature behavior, so evaluate those settings together.
Compare three different design uses of optional forms
For interlocking display words, follow the Swung Note guide and compare a complete title with its documented letter combinations. Its construction provides a different task from merely tightening spacing.
For capital-based titling, the Majesty guide separates discretionary capital ligatures from petite caps and figure choices. Choose the letter combination before judging the numeric information line.
For a style switch, the ED Celandine guide explains the creator’s documented difference between Regular and Outline ligatures. Recheck the actual word after changing styles instead of assuming every substitution survives unchanged. These linked studies use publisher specimens for the original families; the live comparison here remains a separate demonstration with its own selected fonts.
Your questions, answered.
Why does nothing change for one word?
There may be no applicable optional substitution for that sequence in the selected font, or the visible difference may be subtle.
Does turning optional ligatures off disable every required script feature?
No. Required shaping and optional ligature choices have different roles. This comparison is not a control over every shaping operation.
Do I need to type special Unicode ligature characters?
Usually you can keep the ordinary character sequence and let the font and layout engine select supported forms.
