01

Fieldwork: background and attribution

TipoType credits Fieldwork to its team, including Martín Sommaruga and Vicente Lamónaca. The creator account emphasizes optical adjustment of the individual variants instead of relying only on interpolation. The family brings geometric and humanist approaches into one coordinated system.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Geo treatments emphasize geometric construction, while Hum uses humanist choices such as double-storey a and g forms. The twenty-four-style system includes corresponding italics, with alternates and swashes among the documented features. Compare the intended variant rather than assuming the same letter construction across the entire collection.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Set the same short paragraph in Geo and Hum, then compare a headline and an italic phrase. Inspect a and g within words rather than as isolated glyphs. For a publication, keep the chosen branch consistent and use deliberate alternate selections where they serve the text.

For independent comparisons, try Montserrat and Open Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
