Field Gothic: background and attribution
Max Phillips designed Field Gothic as an exploration of American and European sans-serif traditions. Signal’s accounts connect different width groups with references ranging from transit signage to mid-century album covers and packaging. The collection develops those references across coordinated drawings rather than reproducing one historical alphabet.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Narrow, Standard and Wide groups contain multiple widths and weights, with italic resources. The Standard account highlights slightly superelliptical curves, nearly monoline light weights and stronger contrasts at joins in heavier treatments. Inspect the numbered style and width instead of relying on a general family name alone.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Set one headline in several widths while keeping its size fixed. Then compare a paragraph using a less compressed resource. Record both the numbered style and italic selection when preparing a handoff, so a later editor does not substitute another width accidentally.
For independent comparisons, try Inter and Roboto Condensed. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
