FF Milo: background and attribution

Mike Abbink’s account dates FF Milo’s design to 2005–2006 and describes the original aim as a compact sans-serif with short ascenders and descenders. Paul van der Laan contributed the later light-weight expansion. The grain-inspired name reflects Abbink’s intention that the family could serve as an everyday design staple.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The family provides upright and italic styles with small capitals, ligatures, case-sensitive forms and multiple numeral treatments. Lining and oldstyle figures are available in tabular and proportional widths. FF Milo Serif is a companion design, so distinguish the sans-serif family from that separately drawn branch when selecting files.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Set a compact report heading, a paragraph and a numeric table. Compare tabular figures in the table with proportional figures in ordinary prose, and inspect the text at its intended reading size. Use a true italic resource for emphasis and document the numeral settings before handing the report to another editor.

For independent comparisons, try Source Sans 3 and Alegreya Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
