Read the lettering account from its original designer
In his first-person interview, Lindon Leader dates the logo to 1994 at Landor Associates. He explains studying Univers 67 Bold Condensed and Futura Bold, then combining characteristics into proprietary letterforms. Reconstructed shapes, connected letters and a raised lowercase proportion helped make the arrow fit naturally. Consequently, typing FedEx in either starting font does not reproduce the complete wordmark.
Read the separate Univers family guide and Futura family guide to identify the source families while keeping the finished FedEx lettering distinct.
Study negative space without copying the brand
For an independent wordmark, set your own name in a few suitable sans serifs before looking for a symbol between letters. Inspect the counters and gaps in black and white. If an accidental shape needs distorted letters to become visible, compare a simpler option rather than forcing it. Keep a proof with the intended letters visible and a second proof focused on the empty spaces. A hidden device should survive small reproduction without making the name difficult to read.
Compare usable text faces separately from identity artwork
Inter and Jost are independent specimens for comparing lowercase size, geometry and spacing; neither preview is the FedEx original. For discussion of the company itself, distinguish the authorized logo artwork from editable explanatory text. Test your own typography in a narrow label and a large presentation heading so a detail does not work in only one setting. The homepage’s Unicode name-style experiments offer copyable characters, not Leader’s proprietary outlines or an installed Univers or Futura font.
Your questions, answered.
Is the FedEx logo simply Futura Bold?
No. Leader describes studying Futura Bold and Univers 67, then making proprietary letterforms to accommodate the arrow.
Will a standard font automatically create the FedEx arrow?
The designer’s account says the letterforms needed reconstruction. A normal font selection does not reproduce those custom relationships.
