Fanwood: background and attribution

Barry Schwartz designed Fanwood for the League of Moveable Type's open-source catalog. The project identifies older Czech-American type design as its historical influence and supplies both roman and italic lettering. Its catalog distinguishes regular and Text resources, making reading texture and the selected branch part of a useful comparison.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The source lists Regular, Italic, Text and Text Italic. Compare these actual resources instead of assuming Text is merely a label for the same file at another size. The project publishes its source code and Open Font License alongside the download; broad character listings should still be checked against the text you need.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Set the same continuous reading passage in the regular and Text resources at realistic sizes. Compare density, italic emphasis and line endings before choosing a branch. Check punctuation and accented words in context, keeping paragraph spacing consistent so the font comparison is meaningful.

For independent comparisons, try EB Garamond and Source Serif 4. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
