Exposure: background and attribution
Federico Parra Barrios uses photographic exposure as the organizing idea for Exposure. The designer’s account explains a variable system that changes the apparent effect of light on letter outlines. This differs from treating every axis as an ordinary thin-to-bold weight control.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Roman and Italic resources use an exposure range from −100 to +100. Around zero the forms are intended for reading; negative extremes darken and fill counters, while positive extremes break the shapes apart. The extreme settings are more appropriate to deliberate display experiments.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare the same short title at zero, a negative value and a positive value in the original tester. Inspect counters and punctuation rather than judging the change only by overall darkness. Use a calmer setting for any longer explanatory paragraph.
For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Playfair Display. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
