Exocet: background and attribution

Jonathan Barnbrook designed Exocet in 1991, originally for the European annual Illustration Now. Emigre connects the design with early Greek stone carving and Barnbrook’s own experiments with brushwork and carving. Its forms reflect the physical making of letters rather than simply an added digital stone texture.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The publisher offers Light, Medium and Heavy. Evaluate those genuine styles in the original tester, especially the relationship between terminals and internal spaces. Historical inspiration does not imply that the family is a complete reproduction of an ancient writing system.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a short title in Light and Heavy on a plain background. Inspect ambiguous letter combinations and numerals before selecting it for important information. Use a separate text face where a long explanation needs a calmer reading texture.

For independent comparisons, try Cinzel and Marcellus. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
