Dunbar: background and attribution

CJ Dunn developed Dunbar by reinterpreting Jakob Erbar’s Erbar-Grotesk for contemporary use. The foundry explicitly distinguishes that approach from a strict revival. Its family structure explores different lowercase proportions through Tall, Low and Text branches.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Tall and Low serve expressive display work, while Text moderates the proportions for smaller settings. Low uses a smaller x-height and Tall a larger one. The current design repository also documents narrower widths and variable resources, so inspect the selected edition rather than relying on older package counts.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare the same mixed-case heading in Tall and Low before choosing a style. Leave room above and below the Low branch’s small lowercase forms, and choose Text for supporting material. Check alternates and punctuation when setting tightly spaced capitals.

For independent comparisons, try Josefin Sans and Montserrat. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
