01

The foundry defines the design around clear communication

Black Foundry credits Drive to Elliott Amblard and Jérémie Hornus. Its original family account describes a humanist sans system intended for business communication, with open counters and nearly uniform stroke weight. The broader system names Drive, Drive Mono and Drive Prop as coordinated directions. The main family offers nine weights with italic companions and variable resources; documented features include proportional and tabular figures, oldstyle and lining figures, fractions and stylistic sets. Treat the branch names as specific design choices, not an assertion that all three have identical spacing or that a similarly named font is interchangeable.

02

Proof information density using a complete panel

Build a small panel with a heading, three labeled values and a two-sentence explanation. Include the longest actual label and the largest likely number. Keep the panel width fixed while comparing reasonable size and line-spacing choices. If information overflows, examine the wording, label arrangement or grouping before reducing every line. Review whether each value remains clearly associated with its label. A compact family is useful only when the surrounding layout still allows readers to locate and interpret the information.

03

Choose numeral behavior for the content’s actual role

In the licensed original, compare a column of prices or counts using the documented proportional and tabular figure options. Include decimal marks, currency symbols and a total rather than a line of random digits. Check which treatment makes the column easiest to follow without forcing extra spaces into the source text. Compare lining and oldstyle forms separately for a running-text sentence. Record the chosen feature settings in the relevant text style so an updated number retains the intended behavior instead of depending on a designer’s memory.

04

Keep branch selection and independent comparisons explicit

Prepare a second proof with a short identifier and a paragraph, and decide whether those roles need different family directions. Inspect the actual branch specimen rather than inferring its width or character coverage from its name. Explore Source Sans 3 and Inter for independent information-text comparisons, with IBM Plex Mono for a separately identified monospaced direction. None reproduces Drive. Save the exact original family, style and feature choices in the handoff, and follow Black Foundry’s source for the original resources and usage terms.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is Drive the same thing as Drive Mono or Drive Prop?

The foundry describes coordinated directions within a broader system. Confirm the exact branch and inspect its specimen rather than assuming identical spacing or behavior.

Does a tabular numeral option mean every character is monospaced?

No. A numeral-width option concerns the figures. It does not by itself establish equal widths for all letters and punctuation in a proportional family.
