Domaine Display: background and attribution

Kris Sowersby developed Domaine from earlier identity work for the wine company Hardys, undertaken with design consultancy Parallax. Klim lists Domaine Text in 2008 and the Display, Display Narrow and Display Condensed branches in 2013. The design combines French and British serif traditions through a contemporary interpretation.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The foundry highlights triangular bracketed serifs, hooked terminals and italics informed by Deberny & Peignot’s Labeurs Ordinaires. Compare Display widths as drawn resources rather than stretching one font. Keep the separate Domaine Sans collection distinct from the serif family.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Set a magazine heading in a display branch with a shorter caption below it. Compare the triangular serif details at realistic output sizes, then choose a suitable reading resource for longer copy. Save the exact width and italic selection with the layout.

For independent comparisons, try Playfair Display and Lora. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
