Diatype: background and attribution

Diatype began in Fabian Harb’s student explorations of Swiss neo-grotesque lettering. Dinamo documents a public appearance in 2013, family development with Elias Hanzer in 2018 and its retail release announcement in September 2020. These are separate milestones in the development of the design.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The current collection spans multiple widths and proportional, Semi Mono and Mono branches. Script extensions have their own credits and resources. Choose the actual script package and spacing model instead of assuming that every file in a multiscript collection contains everything.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare an interface paragraph, a compact label and a data row. Check alternate letters in the original specimen and preserve the chosen branch and feature settings. Where several languages share a layout, compare baseline and apparent size using their real text.

For independent comparisons, try Inter and Roboto Mono. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.

Official preview and font resources

Use Dinamo to try the original and investigate the files, styles and terms for your intended workflow. This site does not distribute or serve Diatype font software.

The editable alternatives here have their own source profiles and included licenses. For the difference between a font file and copied characters, read Unicode text versus fonts.
