Connect the lettering choice to a specific source
P22’s original Posada family account connects the digital set with José Guadalupe Posada’s broadsheets and calavera imagery. It credits James Grieshaber and Richard Kegler, with Regular and Irregular alphabets and 60 Extras. The later font is an interpretation, not the original printmaker’s digital file. The Smithsonian’s own collection account documents an ofrenda with family photographs, offerings and papel picado. Use that specific context to keep the people and dedication central rather than treating the ornaments as the whole message.
Proof the actual names and dedication before decorating
Set every name with its proper accents and spelling, then add the intended dates and a short dedication. Check the selected alphabet’s actual glyph set; a missing accented letter can introduce an unintended fallback style. Keep the name clearly larger or more prominent than optional explanatory text. Rye and Cormorant Garamond here are independent display and reading comparisons, not P22 Posada or claims of one authentic festival style. Compare a final-size printed label, especially when several names share a small surface.
Keep decorative glyphs and paper edges away from the text
If using an Extras font, choose the intended symbol through its own specimen or glyph palette and place it separately from the name. Leave a clear margin between ornaments, dedication and the edge of a paper banner. For a cut-paper experiment, inspect the actual cut paths and enclosed pieces rather than assuming a font preview is a finished cutting pattern. Keep a plain-text dedication for captions. The decorative name-and-message generator offers Unicode substitutions; it does not supply Posada illustrations, create papel picado artwork or replace the original alphabet’s accented glyphs.
Your questions, answered.
Is there one official Día de los Muertos font?
The cited sources document specific printmaking and remembrance contexts, not one universal typeface. Choose a resource that supports the real names, wording and purpose of the display.
Does P22 Posada Extras type ordinary dedication text?
Extras is a decorative resource separate from the family’s alphabets. Inspect the mapped symbols and keep the actual dedication in a suitable text face.
