David Bowie Font: Blackstar Symbols & Album Lettering

Understand Blackstar’s documented Unicode star and designed lettering, copy the actual symbol and distinguish one album system from other Bowie typography.

Start with the album and actual artifact before accepting a font identification. Compare a text character, composed title lettering and supporting typography as separate elements of the design.

Blackstar uses a character as well as designed artwork

Jonathan Barnbrook’s original Tokyo TDC project account explains that the Unicode character ★ replaces the written album title so it could be shared across websites, music software and email. The account separately identifies broken-star graphics spelling Bowie and a black-on-black design. These are different elements: one is a text character, while the other is composed artwork. This specific album system should not be described as the typeface of every earlier Bowie cover or poster.

02

Copy the star without claiming it is a whole font

You can copy this character: ★. Paste it into your intended message or document before selecting surrounding text. Keep the copied symbol separate from any image of the album lettering; a single star does not generate the broken-star Bowie construction or an alphabet in that style. For an original music announcement, compare one symbol beside a plain title with a version where the symbol becomes the dominant heading. Check the result in the destination application, since a character and a fixed artwork file have different rendering behavior.

03

Choose supporting typography for the actual format

For a personal design study, arrange a main symbol, an original title and a short information line on both a square page and a narrow announcement. Keep the small information readable before exploring subtle material effects. Barnbrook’s own project page records the album graphics’ Creative Commons release and points to its dedicated resource; consult that actual resource for the applicable artwork terms rather than treating all Bowie images as one font download. Inter and Source Serif 4 below are independent supporting-text comparisons. The Unicode font-style tool creates copied character styles, not the album’s complete artwork.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is the Blackstar title a special font I must install?

The cited project account explicitly identifies the album-title star as the Unicode character ★. The surrounding graphic system is a separate design.

Will copying ★ produce the Bowie lettering below it?

No. The broken-star arrangement is artwork, not text automatically generated by inserting the star character.
