Cotillion Pro: background and attribution
Jim Rimmer completed Cotillion shortly before the turn of the century. Canada Type connects its character with his childhood exposure to deco lettering and his approach to calligraphic design. The Pro edition refines and extends that original rather than being a generic category of decorative lettering.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Its low lowercase height and tall proportions give the serif design a restrained decorative rhythm. Canada Type documents true italics, small caps, ligatures, seven figure styles, fractions and stylistic alternatives, including lowercase serif-angle options. Inspect these in software that exposes the relevant OpenType controls.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a magazine title with a smaller date and contributor line. Keep the secondary information readable rather than shrinking everything to fit a decorative heading. Compare a long name, an all-cap label and a mixed-case title to decide where the design’s proportions help your layout.
For independent comparisons, try Italiana and Cormorant Garamond. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
