01

Cooper Hewitt: background and attribution

Chester Jenkins created Cooper Hewitt for the museum’s renewed identity. The museum explains that a commission initially contemplated evolving Polaris Condensed, but Jenkins redrew the typeface using the earlier forms as a rough guide to widths and stroke thicknesses.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The museum describes modified geometric curves and arches. Its download page distinguishes OpenType resources, a Windows-compatible package with a more limited weight selection, web resources and editable source files. Choose the package for the actual workflow rather than assuming each archive has identical contents.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare an exhibition heading, an object label and a longer caption. Source Sans 3 and Montserrat provide independent sans comparisons. The museum offers the original under an Open Font License; follow its source page for files and notices.

For independent comparisons, try Source Sans 3 and Montserrat. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
