Congenial: background and attribution
Laura Worthington developed Congenial as a restrained sans-serif companion for her more decorative type library and her own website. Its design retains hand-drawn influences, especially visible in heavier resources, rather than treating the sans-serif category as a rule against expressive detail.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The creator describes a broad weight range with italics, a generous lowercase height and differentiated characters. Compare the actual weight, italic and numerical resources required by the project; a wide family range does not guarantee every edition contains identical files.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a paragraph beneath an expressive script title. Open Sans and Source Sans 3 offer independent text-oriented sans comparisons. Check character distinctions and emphasis at ordinary reading size.
For independent comparisons, try Open Sans and Source Sans 3. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
