Compendium: background and attribution
Alejandro Paul developed Compendium as part of his exploration of nineteenth-century American penmanship. In his first-person account, he places Platt Rogers Spencer’s work before the later calligraphic practice of Louis Madarasz, explaining Compendium’s relationship to his earlier Burgues design through that chronology.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The comparison concerns historical models and the resulting calligraphic character, not a claim that the two digital families are identical. Inspect the original specimen and available letter choices before choosing a formal script for a particular name or heading.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a short invitation line in mixed case and leave enough room around the capitals. Inspect the connection between letters before adding further flourishes. Keep dates and addresses in a clearer companion when the script provides the main decorative voice.
For independent comparisons, try Pinyon Script and Great Vibes. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
