Eric Olson designed Colfax for Process Type Foundry. The publisher describes it through implied geometry: subtly straight sides meet almost circular forms without turning the alphabet into a mechanically measured exercise. Its purpose includes everyday typography as well as more extreme display settings. This approach makes the family useful to study when comparing how geometric impressions can emerge from carefully adjusted shapes rather than from identical circles and repeated mathematical constructions.

Forms, styles and what to inspect
The family combines four central working weights with two more extreme weights, each accompanied by an italic. The catalog lists Thin, Light, Regular, Medium, Bold and Black. Its oval character and quiet straight-sided forms shape the overall texture. Case-sensitive arrows and an alternate J offer specific choices within practical layouts. Evaluate these small details alongside paragraphs and headings, since their value is easier to judge in context than in an isolated alphabet.

Try it in a real layout
Make a simple product-information page with a heading, descriptive paragraph and a link marked by an arrow. Compare Regular and Medium for the paragraph before choosing a stronger heading weight. Align the arrow with the surrounding text using the appropriate case-sensitive option. If the name includes J, compare the alternate in the whole word. Keep line lengths moderate so the family’s understated geometric rhythm remains visible without tiring the reader.
