Choose the example’s role and a real monospace family
Decide whether the document contains a short inline command or a separate multi-line example. For a block, compare the longest line and its indentation before choosing a font size. Source Code Pro and Roboto Mono are independent specimen options here; their previews do not install either family into Word.
Use the Word font guide for making a downloaded family available. A font choice changes the appearance of characters, not whether the code is correct or executable.
Save the formatting as a named Word style
In the desktop workflow documented by Microsoft, select your formatted example, open the Home tab’s Styles gallery and use Create a Style. Give it a recognizable name such as Code Example. The saved style lets later blocks use the same treatment.
Keep paragraph spacing and indentation deliberate. Microsoft documents those controls separately from the font choice. Avoid aligning a block by adding a different number of spaces before every line; preserve source indentation while using paragraph controls for the block’s position in the page.
Check straight quotes and automatic text changes
Microsoft documents that Word can replace straight quotation marks with curly smart quotes. In its Windows desktop instructions, File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat As You Type contains the straight-quotes replacement setting. Use the documentation for your edition when changing that preference.
Changing the font does not turn a curly quote back into a straight quote. Inspect the actual characters of commands, strings, hyphens and punctuation against the original source. A visually tidy block can still contain a character changed during editing.
Keep the original source alongside the document
Review long lines at the final page width and distinguish a visual wrap from an actual new line. Use one small explanatory caption rather than making code carry all the instructions. If color is used for emphasis, preserve another cue that makes the same distinction in monochrome.
Retain the original source file as the executable reference and the Word document as its explanation. Check copied examples in the intended development workflow before distribution. For editor-specific font controls, use the VS Code guide; it concerns a different application.
Your questions, answered.
Does a monospace font make code pasted into Word executable?
No. A font controls character appearance. Keep the original source and use the intended development environment to assess executable code.
Why do quotation marks change even when I use a coding font?
Word’s smart-quotes replacement is an editing preference separate from font selection. Inspect the actual characters and adjust the relevant setting for your edition.
