01

Clear Sans: background and attribution

Daniel Ratighan at Monotype designed Clear Sans under the direction of Intel’s Open Source Technology Center user-experience team. The project emphasizes screen legibility and clear interface lettering. Intel has discontinued its maintenance and archived the repository; that status is separate from the continued availability of the released font.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The documented family includes thin, light, regular and medium resources with bold and italic styles, covering Latin, Greek and Cyrillic. Intel distributes it under Apache 2.0 for private and commercial use. The repository notes that Monotype’s original design source files are not included.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare actual interface labels and a paragraph, paying attention to similar-looking characters and narrow spaces. Keep the supplied license with distributions as required. Review the available resources before assuming every weight has a matching italic.

For independent comparisons, try Inter and Source Sans 3. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
