01

Choose the actual resource, not just the name

Ink/Stitch’s Chicken Scratch is a pre-digitized lettering resource derived from Reenie Beanie and distributed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Its documented glyph inventory includes upper- and lowercase letters, numbers and selected accented characters. A different Chicken Scratch by FrayedDawn is a TrueType handwriting project: its creator says it was made from a neater version of their own writing using a YourFonts template. Those resources share a name, not interchangeable files or a guaranteed identical design.

02

Keep embroidery scaling inside its designed range

The Ink/Stitch font page specifies 80–120 percent scaling, approximately 18.4–27.6 mm, and warns that resizing outside the lettering tool can produce unsuitable embroidery. Its official lettering instructions use Extensions > Ink/Stitch > Lettering > Lettering: enter text, choose the font and adjust its scale there. This is an embroidery workflow rather than ordinary desktop-font installation. A TTF that merely resembles handwriting does not become the same pre-digitized lettering resource when installed in a word processor.

03

Test an actual label before making the finished piece

Write your complete label, including its apostrophe, number and any accented name. Check the selected resource’s glyph coverage before simplifying the spelling to fit. For an embroidery sample, choose a permitted scale in the lettering tool and make a small test on the intended fabric with your intended setup before committing to the finished item. For a printed label, compare the complete line in the chosen screen font at the final output size instead. The general embroidery guide covers a broader planning task. The homepage Unicode text styles replace characters; they do not generate stitch paths or install either Chicken Scratch resource.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Are the Ink/Stitch and FrayedDawn resources the same font?

No. One is documented pre-digitized embroidery lettering derived from Reenie Beanie; the other is its maker’s independent handwriting TTF.

Can I scale the Ink/Stitch lettering to any size?

Its documented range is 80–120 percent. Use the lettering tool’s scale controls and test the intended material rather than treating canvas resizing as equivalent.
