Chess Fonts: Piece Symbols, Diagrams and Game Notation

Explore the sources, compare the examples and choose the right approach.

Separate chess-piece glyphs from board layout and game parsing, then choose the right typesetting resource for a diagram or annotated game.

01

Identify the kind of chess typography

A chess font may supply piece symbols, but a publication can also require board squares, coordinates and a sequence of moves. Those are separate tasks. Begin by deciding whether the output is an isolated king symbol, a static position or an annotated game. A decorative alphabet with chess motifs will not necessarily provide the pieces and layout functions required for a readable diagram.

02

Distinguish fonts from notation packages

Ulrike Fischer’s chessfss documentation describes commands for selecting chess fonts through LaTeX’s font-selection system. It explicitly distinguishes that role from parsing and formatting PGN game input. This is a useful boundary when choosing tools: changing glyphs does not interpret a move list. Use the package documentation to identify which layer supplies the symbols and which layer constructs positions or renders game notation.

03

Use a board-aware workflow for games

Overleaf’s chess-notation guide demonstrates xskak with chessboard and explains that xskak extends skak while using separate chess fonts. It also warns that skaknew is a font collection rather than a replacement game package. Follow a documented minimal example before combining features. Keep the starting position, moves and side-to-move information in structured source instead of manually arranging unrelated symbols to resemble a position.

04

Check diagram clarity and export

Review both sides’ pieces on light and dark squares at the final publication size. Check coordinates, annotations and any mover indicator against the intended position. Preserve editable source so a correction does not require rebuilding a diagram by eye. The LaTeX font-family guide covers broader family selection, while the math font guide explains another case where glyphs and layout machinery have distinct jobs. Review the exported document as well as the editor.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Does a chess font parse PGN moves?

A font supplies glyphs. The chessfss documentation distinguishes font selection from game parsing and formatting.

Is skaknew a newer version of skak?

No. Overleaf identifies skaknew as a set of chess fonts rather than a replacement for the game package.
