Identify the simplified blackletter sold by Solotype
Solotype’s Cathedral is described by its publisher as an experiment in simplifying blackletter. The publisher says it did not appear in the old Solotype catalog; that observation is not a release date. Its present page provides a text tester and character map. Set your actual heading there before deciding whether this particular alphabet fits the project. The name alone does not identify every church-inspired typeface or a standard used by cathedrals.
Study Hottinger’s rose-window counters as a different design
Caitlin Hottinger’s Cathedral project account, published in May 2016, describes inspiration from a church in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her ornamental starting point uses rose-window-inspired counters and unusual terminals. Subsequent variations open those counters for smaller settings. Compare the documented Ornamental specimen with Regular and Bold: identify which internal openings change while the underlying letterform remains related. This is a creator’s design presentation, not proof that its files are currently offered for download.
Separate alphabet setting from architectural ornaments
Hottinger also presents dingbats, borders and corners that can be rearranged into illustrated buildings. Plan a fictional WINDOW STUDIES exhibition card with two separate layers: the written title and a building illustration assembled from the documented ornament idea. Keep those roles distinct when explaining the design; an ornament is not a missing letter. Use the blackletter examples for broader comparisons. The homepage copyable text styles substitute Unicode characters; they do not install either Cathedral design or supply Hottinger’s architectural ornament set.
Your questions, answered.
Is there one official Cathedral font?
No. This guide identifies Solotype’s blackletter product and Caitlin Hottinger’s separate architectural project; their identical name does not make them interchangeable.
Can I download Hottinger’s Cathedral from this page?
This page links her original project presentation. It does not provide her font files or establish current acquisition terms.
