Casablanca: background and attribution
Red Rooster traces Casablanca to Adrian Williams’s original 1992 design and a 1997 digital version by Steve Jackaman for International TypeFounders. The publisher names Carlos Winkow’s 1941 Electra as an influence; this refers to Winkow’s design and should not be confused with W. A. Dwiggins’s separate Electra family. That specific lineage gives Casablanca a more useful historical context than applying an undifferentiated Art Deco label to every geometric decorative sans serif.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The foundry lists sixteen styles across regular and condensed widths, with Light, Book, Medium and Bold designs and corresponding alternate forms. Its decorative geometric sans-serif construction is presented for headlines, posters and identity work. Compare the alternate and ordinary forms directly in the intended name before choosing a width. The publisher’s particular family structure should also be distinguished from unrelated Casablanca releases whose catalogs use different style counts or drawings.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Set a cinema-club poster with a short title, a screening date and a small venue line. Compare regular and condensed widths without changing the wording. Try an alternate letter only where it improves the actual title, and keep the rest of the alphabet consistent. Use generous space around the heading and a restrained companion for practical information so the decorative geometry remains the main visual gesture rather than competing with several period motifs.
For independent comparisons, try Poiret One and Josefin Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
