01

Use the co-creator’s identification rather than a visual guess

In Kickstarter’s 2012 case study, co-creator Max Temkin explicitly names Helvetica. He connects the choice, together with periods after nouns, to an intentionally corporate, official and declarative effect. The account does not specify a Helvetica edition or weight. Avoid converting that evidence into an unsupported claim about Helvetica Neue Bold, a particular digital file or every later localized deck.

02

Compare punctuation before decorating the card

Make two versions of the sample response: one ending with a period and one without. Keep the same family, size, line breaks and card dimensions so punctuation is the only variable. Then compare a prompt with a blank against a complete response. Read each card aloud before revising its wording. This exercise examines the co-creator’s stated design relationship without copying the game’s text, branding or card artwork.

03

Prototype short and long cards in one layout

The case study describes the team moving from a Word document to InDesign and shareable PDFs. For your own deck, define one text frame and test a short response, a two-line response and your longest prompt. Revise awkward wording before making one card’s type much smaller than the others. Compare a dark card with light text against its reversed version on paper. Inter and Open Sans below are independent available families, not the identified original. See the Helvetica guide for that family’s background. The homepage text-style previews change Unicode characters rather than selecting Helvetica or producing a print-ready card deck.
