Canela: background and attribution
Miguel Reyes developed Canela from a Caslon-inspired starting point in a markedly different direction. Reduced serifs and flared stroke endings reflect his interest in stone-carved forms.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The collection includes display, condensed, deck and text directions. Its classification sits between conventional serif and sans descriptions, so the actual forms and intended optical size matter more than a broad label.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a quiet display title and inspect the flared terminals. Compare the appropriate optical branch before choosing a small-size application.
For independent comparisons, try Prata and Marcellus. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
