Calibre: background and attribution
Kris Sowersby designed Calibre, released by Klim in 2011. Its neo-grotesk direction draws on West Berlin street lettering and Nebiolo’s Recta, with optical adjustments to the underlying geometry. It was developed alongside Metric, which shares a structural basis but differs in key details.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Compare the finish of the terminals and the shapes that distinguish the design from another sans serif. The publisher lists matching italics and features such as tabular numerals. An equal-width numeral setting is useful to investigate separately from the appearance of a headline.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a heading with a small information table below. Keep the font size constant while comparing digits and punctuation. Arimo and DM Sans offer separate grotesque-oriented comparisons; check their different line breaks before replacing an existing family.
For independent comparisons, try Arimo and DM Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
Official preview and font resources
Use Klim Type Foundry to try the original and investigate the files, styles and terms for your intended workflow. This site does not distribute or serve Calibre font software.
The editable alternatives here have their own source profiles and included licenses. For the difference between a font file and copied characters, read Unicode text versus fonts.
