Cabazon: background and attribution
Cabazon is Jim Parkinson’s informal blackletter design, first published in 2005 according to Delve Fonts. Parkinson drew on manuscript and hand-lettered sources as well as work by Rudolf Koch, Ross George and Samuel Welo. His experience with newspaper nameplates also informed the project.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The creator describes simplified forms and a more casual character than some blackletter styles. The current version expands the character repertoire and adds alternates, ligatures and other features. Inspect that edition rather than assuming a much older copy includes the same coverage.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a short beverage label or a distinctive title on a plain background. Compare repeated vertical strokes and any decorative capital in the actual wording. Keep supporting paragraphs in a quieter reading face and use the blackletter treatment where it has enough room to remain clear.
For independent comparisons, try Pirata One and UnifrakturCook. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
