Brandon Text: background and attribution
Hannes von Döhren designed Brandon Text in 2012 as a companion to Brandon Grotesque. HVD describes a larger x-height and adjustments for longer text, smaller sizes and screen use. Its geometric references draw on sans serif lettering associated with the 1920s and 1930s.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The publisher describes six weights with matching italics, optically corrected geometric shapes and screen-oriented hinting. Number sets, alternates and fractions support different typographic jobs. The Text family’s proportions should be judged separately from its Grotesque companion.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a paragraph and navigation labels using the intended screen size. Judge line length, lowercase size and emphasis before choosing the weight. If combining it with Brandon Grotesque, match their visual sizes instead of assuming identical point sizes will align.
For independent comparisons, try Nunito Sans and Alegreya Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
