Bohemia Font: Eduardo Manso’s Transitional Text Face

Explore the sources, compare the examples and choose the right approach.

Linotype credits Eduardo Manso with Bohemia in 2003 and relates its design to transitional text faces such as Baskerville, with a more curving character. Use the family’s documented history as a starting point, then judge a complete text page rather than selecting it from a title specimen alone.

01

Follow the Bohemia and Argot history

The publisher says Bohemia reached Linotype through its 2003 International Type Design Contest, where it received a top award. It also records a 2004 Type Directors Club certificate under the name Argot. Keep that naming history attached to Eduardo Manso’s design; a similar geographic or decorative font name does not establish an equivalent family. The linked Linotype listing provides the actual specimen, while Lora is a separate text-face comparison here.

02

Make a real paragraph-size comparison

Take one paragraph from your intended article, including its longest words and punctuation. Set it at 9, 10 and 11 points on separate printed proofs with a consistent column width. The publisher mentions text at 9 points and above, but that is not a guarantee for every paper, printer or reader. Compare the density, word spaces and line endings in the actual output. Adjust line spacing independently rather than assuming a single point-size choice resolves the entire page.

03

Proof italic and small-cap roles separately

The listing includes Regular, Regular SC, Italic and Bold names. Before formatting a chapter opener, check which exact files your package supplies. Try an italic phrase within a regular paragraph and a short heading using the available small-cap edition. Compare both against an unformatted baseline. Do not create small caps merely by shrinking capitals without inspecting the intended edition, and check numbers and punctuation alongside the letters. Keep emphasis limited enough that the main paragraph still has a clear reading rhythm.

04

Review a whole reading spread before delivery

Build two facing pages with a title, running heading, paragraph text and a caption. Inspect widows, repeated word spaces and the relationship between italic emphasis and captions at final print size. Save the complete family and style names in the project notes so collaborators can detect substitutions. Select the license for the actual delivery, including any live web use or embedded publication. A static specimen image and an editable document require different production decisions; obtain the original files through an appropriate licensed source.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

What is the relationship between Bohemia and the name Argot?

Linotype’s account says this Eduardo Manso design received a 2004 Type Directors Club certificate under the name Argot. Preserve that specific attribution when researching the family.

Does the publisher’s 9-point text suggestion guarantee readability?

No. Proof the actual paragraph, stock and output at several sizes. Point size alone does not determine how your finished text page reads.
