Blackout Font

Tyler Finck’s Blackout takes its starting point from filling in sans serif newspaper headlines. The League of Moveable Type distributes it as an open-source family. That filled-letter experiment explains why its shapes depart from ordinary readable text lettering.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

Midnight is solid, 2 AM reverses the treatment and Sunrise uses strokes. These are distinct graphic constructions rather than three conventional weights. The official page links the Open Font License and source code; check the included character set before planning multilingual titles.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

Try one short headline in each treatment against the intended background. Preserve enough contrast around the filled shapes, and keep supporting information in a more conventional face. Judge the word as a whole when individual letters lose their familiar counters.
