Blackmoor: background and attribution
Blackmoor is David Quay’s design, dated 1983 in the publisher account. It combines textura-style blackletter lowercase with Lombardic capitals and a deliberately worn surface. It is a modern interpretation of older lettering traditions rather than a surviving medieval font file.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Compare the capital shapes with the more tightly patterned lowercase. Inspect the distressed edges at the intended display size; surface damage and the basic structure contribute separately to the result. An enlarged alphabet alone does not establish that a long title will remain easy to read.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a short historical or horror heading and compare it with a clean background. Keep essential dates and explanatory text in a clearer companion. Check a full name with repeated vertical strokes early, since the resulting rhythm can be more challenging than a single decorative initial.
For independent comparisons, try UnifrakturCook and Pirata One. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
